Elder & Diaconate Nomination Form

Below is the submission form to nominate members of Christ Presbyterian Church to the roles of elder, deacon, and deaconess. According to the Book of Church Order of the Presbyterian Church in America, the role of elder and deacon (men) are ordained roles, and the role of deaconess (women) is a commissioned role.

Elders serve in the governing body of the church, which is called “the session.” It is a role of shepherding, discipline, and oversight of the spiritual interests of the local church and Church at large.

Deacons and deaconesses serve in the diaconate, which is a body devoted to serving the needs of the church and occasionally the Church at large. It is a role of sympathy, service, and helping the members of the church, and on occasion, the greater community in times of need.

The roles of elders and men and women serving in the diaconate are further outlined in the Presbyterian Church in America’s Book of Church Order, chapters 7-9, which can be found here.

When considering who to nominate, it is essential to submit names of men and women who are:

  • Members in good standing of Christ Presbyterian Church Old Hickory Blvd, Cool Springs, or Music Row.
  • Men and women who already exhibit the qualities and even participate in the actions and duties typically charged to elders, deacons, and deaconesses, though they do not formally carry any of these titles.
  • Be people of good character as outlined in the scriptures, particularly 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9. While these scriptures do not present an exhaustive list, it provides a guideline for both single and married men and women who would be considered for a role as elder, deacon, or deaconess.
  • Please submit your nominations by December 20, 2021.

If you have any further questions about this process, please feel free to reach out to your pastor.
