Learning Groups
Midsize groups for learning Scripture, theology, and mission in the context of community
There are several Learning Groups to choose from at Christ Pres, some of them seasonal and others ongoing. These midsize groups are chiefly for learning Scripture, theology, and mission in the context of interactive community.
Learning Group subjects range from Bible basics for seekers and new believers to more in-depth studies of different books of the Bible. All Learning Groups aim to strike a balance between in-depth instruction and personal interaction.
Fall 2022 Learning Groups
Evangelism 101
Teacher: Jim McNamee
Sundays 10:00 - 10:50 A.M.
Location: Conference Room
Evangelism: A vision and call to share our faith with an unbelieving world. This interactive course will cover numerous questions, including: What is the vision and call for the church to share the gospel? What is the Gospel? How to deepen relationships and spiritual conversations? How to share your story? How should I communicate God's message? How to help friends and family cross the line of faith? The course will mix theology, scripture, and practical application. This course is about grace, not guilt. Sharing your faith out of guilt cannot communicate grace! Understanding the nature of real evangelism will set you free so that you’ll be able, by God’s grace, to impact those around you for Christ.
Essential Truths of the Christian Faith
Teacher: Lee Eric Fesko
Sundays 10:00 -10:50 A.M.
Location: Event Center (Lower School Gym)
What separates Christianity from every other religion in the world? There are fundamental truths—uniquely Christian—which by removing any single one would cause the whole system of belief to fall. Join this group to discover not only what these truths are but the why behind them as well. Topics include: God's Holiness, Man's Sinfulness, The Trinity, The Bible as God's Word, Jesus our Substitute, and many more. Join this interactive group as we explore together what makes a Christian a Christian.
Genesis: Christ, Covenant, and the Future of Christianity
Teacher: Dr. David Filson
Sundays 10:00 -10:50 A.M.
Location: Choir Room
A mysterious book that starts "in the beginning" and concludes "in Egypt" sets the trajectory for the whole Bible. Francis Schaefer once observed that apart from Genesis 1-11, we have no basis for a Christian worldview. If you are looking for a deep dive into Christ and his covenant love for his people, please join us as we study the sprawling story of redemption found in Genesis.
Psalms Through the Centuries in Literature, Theology, and Music
Teacher: Dr. Paul Lim with Occasional Guest Speakers
Sundays 10:00 -10:50 A.M.
Location: Gathering Room
Psalms have been Israel's favorite songbook for centuries, as well as for the Christian communities, often marking the hours for prayer in monastic traditions. Moreover, works of literature by figures such as Herman Melville, Bono, and Sojourner Truth either directly reference or take inspiration from these treasured songs of the Jewish and Christian worshippers. This class will look at the history of how this collection of poetry became such a beloved part of the Christian liturgy, literature, and sacred—and profane—music. There is no prerequisite except for a curious and worshipful heart that seeks to be transformed by the Lord who inspired these ordinary singer-songwriters or lyricists.
Pilgrims In Progress
Teachers: Tom Price, Buz Graham, Todd Teller
Sundays 10:00 -10:50 A.M.
Location: Window Room
The seniors of Christ Presbyterian Church meet in person weekly (all ages are welcome, and a Zoom option is available!) for a verse-by-verse study of John's Gospel. This study provides a captivating portrait of Jesus by his beloved disciple written that his readers might "believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing we might have life in His name."
Setting Parents Free
Teachers: Rob & Lisa Wheeler, Campbell & Rebecca Metcalfe, and Howard & Michelle Curlin
Sundays 10:00 -10:50 A.M.
Location: Meeting Room
Parents often feel pressured to be perfect. Can you imagine the pressure of being a perfect parent or the confusion for a child who may be under the illusion that their parents are perfect? The teachers will facilitate the group in a book-club style to foster honest conversations among parents. We'll be reading through Dr. John L. Cox's helpful and fun book, Setting Parents Free: How to Give Your Kids What They Need and Where to Run When You Drop the Ball. You don't need to read beforehand, own the book, or even be a parent to join in. All are welcome!
Inspirations Class for Adults with Special Needs
Teachers: Mark Petty, Carl Sanders, John Greene
Sundays 10:00 -10:50 A.M.
Location: Lower School Room 113
Throughout the fall, the Inspirations Class will learn "Christology"—the study of Jesus. Using the Bible and the book, The Acrostic of Jesus, we will use an alphabetical list of names and attributes of Jesus and study who Jesus is and why he came to earth.
